How to Train ChatGPT to Write Like You

You need to write a blog article, so you ask ChatGPT to help you write it. You hope for it to help you speed up the process, but two hours later, you’re further away from completing your article than you were when you started. Why does ChatGPT sometimes give you garbage responses? Believe it or not, it has nothing to do with the AI but instead has everything to do with the user.

To get a better response from ChatGPT, the answer is simple.

You need to give it a better prompt.  A prompt is simply the set of instructions you’re providing ChatGPT.

Better instructions equal better output. Simple.

The question then becomes, how can you train ChatGPT to write like you?

In this article, you’ll learn exactly how to train ChatGPT to write like you so that you get the output that you want.

Luckily, we’ve been using ChatGPT to publish over 140 articles over the last year, so we know what we’re talking about. We’ve been through trial and error, and we’ve discovered the best system for training ChatGPT to write like you.

The Perfect Prompt Structure to Train ChatGPT to Write Like You

The perfect prompt structure is as follows: Primer + Prompt = a great output

The Primer

Before you even give ChatGPT instructions, you want to prepare it – this is what we call priming. The prime stage includes 4 steps:

  1. Assign a role
  2. Provide guidelines, such as grammar, formatting, style of writing etc.
  3. Teach it about the topic
  4. Provide examples of output you expect (optional)
  5. Provide instruction

Now you’re ready to give ChatGPT your prompt.

Prompt

There are a few key things to remember when focusing on prompting. These include:

  • Be as specific as possible
  • Ask it to write only one thing at a time (this is especially true for longer pieces of writing like blog articles). For example, ask it to start writing the introduction first and you will approve it before writing the next section, and repeat that process for every section of your article. You’ll find you get a better output that way
  • Reiterate that you want it to follow the guidelines you’ve previously provided

An example might look like this:

However, what if the article you’re writing requires ChatGPT to have more in-depth knowledge on the topic in order to write about it? Or what if you already have a Table of Contents in mind, or what if you simply want ChatGPT to consider your audience’s mindset when writing the blog?

In the case when you have specific information you want ChatGPT to be aware of, you can write a prompt like this:

Either way, the prompt part of your ChatGPT session is usually going to be the simplest part. It’s the Primer that is the secret sauce to making ChatGPT write like you.

A Recap on How to Train ChatGPT to Write Like You

To recap, you want to use a primer, which teaches ChatGPT and provides guidelines for your next set of instructions.

Then, you want to provide a prompt, which is your main set of instructions for ChatGPT. In this section, you may provide ChatGPT with context relevant to your article if necessary.

What If It Still Doesn’t Work?

The bottom line is that AI is new, and it’s not always going to turn out how we plan. However, the key is to test. The more you test, the more you get your hands dirty, the better the result.

If you get a bad result once and stop using it, you’ll never get the result you want. We can say from personal experience that the more you test, the faster you’ll move towards getting the result you want. If the set of instructions and guidelines we’ve provided don’t get the result you want, simply change the guidelines or instructions.

But test. And continue to test. That is the key.

So, what’s next?

You now have a prompt structure to use when you’re writing articles. You have a specific Primer and Prompt that we’ve provided, but remember, change the primer and prompt to suit your specific needs and brand voice – after all you’re aiming to get ChatGPT to write like you, not us!
